How about trying Muay Thai? The popularity of this ancient art of defence is grow ing by leaps and bounds â" or should we say by kicks and punches? What is known as the Art of Eight Limbs is well on its way to surpassing Taekwondo, karate and even Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as the ultimate in the martial arts; though often confused with MMA fighting, it stands on its own as the ultimate in discipline and conditioning. If you are indeed a well-conditioned athlete looking for a new challenge, why not pick up on some Muay Thai techniques?Your Superprof has scoured the country to find the best gyms and the most competent instructors of Muay Thai boxing. Much more than you might think.Reflect for a moment on the origins of Muay Thai: centuries ago, it was how armies fought in the country now known as Thailand. Now, hundreds of years later, Muay Thai fighting remains virtually unchanged.Fighters are only minimally clad; save for possibly their pra jiad â" an armband signalling their allegiance, a fighterâs apparel consists of a pair of shorts especially cut to permit high kicking. What did those long-ago fighters have to train with? Only their master and each other. So, seeking classes in a bare-bones studio, training with nothing but Thai pads and boxing gloves under the guidance of a coach who three times was named Lumpinee Stadium champion and World Champion five timesâ¦You may just be harkening back to when Muay Thai was less of a sport and more of a fight for survival. The Be st Muay Thai Clubs in ManchesterMancunians love their sports; from football to swimming, there is a sport for everyone in Manchester. For those that love more than the sporting aspects of sports, who love the discipline they gain and the confidence it brings them, there are Muay Thai clubs aplenty. Some of them, like the Manchester Fighting Academy, are cleverly concealed within another martial art centre, the Fighting Fit, to be exact. They have a fantastic facility, fully equipped with everything you need to train, from raised rings for sparring to heavy bags to toughen up your shins â" did you know that Muay Thai kicks are made with your shins? Muay Thai fighters do not wear the traditional garb favoured by other martial arts like judo, Jiu-Jitsu and karate. As a Muay Thai fighter, you would wear the same thing they do in mixed martial arts: shorts â" either Muay Thai shorts or MMA shorts; as long as they are cut high and loose on the leg so your kicks wonât be restricted. You will also wear hand wraps and, when sparring, Muay Thai gloves; you may even want to wear shin guards â" only while youâre training; you wonât be allowed to wear them in the ring.Smack in the middle of City Centre, you will find Eagle Kickboxing. They are a cross-community martial arts gym that trains in wrestling, boxing, mixed martial arts and Muay Thai. They also do something called no-gi grappling, a discipline that reinforces many of the techniques used in MMA fighting.Luke Roche is the Muay Thai coach for this group; he was ranked #1 in Ireland when he was competing.Today, he brings his considerable expertise to his students, donning Thai pads and helping them target their kicks for maximum power and efficiency. As far as we can tell, IFSâs 8-week trial period is unique in the country; nowhere have we found a Muay T hai club that offers prospective fighters a chance to try things out for two months, practising either MMA or Muay Thai.Of course, that is not the only Muay Thai club in Belfast; there are othersâ¦Glasgowâs Muay Thai CentresIt might be a bit hard to imagine fun-loving, freewheeling Glaswegians training up to become martial artists but, judging by the number (and quality) of clubs we found there, their love of combat sports is well-rooted.We featured many of Glesgaâs excellent Muay Thai clubs in our full-length article; we want to take this opportunity to talk about Glasgow Thai Boxing Academy.Thai Boxing is a bit different than Muay Thai. The Art of Eight Limbs affords more striking points than Thai boxing does; four more, to be exact. Thai boxing does not permit using elbows and knees to strike your opponent. While that may make it sound just like any ordinary boxing match, what makes Thai boxing an intriguing premise is the endurance and strength required to win a bout, as well as the reflexes required to block or avert the blows. If you are already in excellent physical shape and are considering studying Muay Thai, you may like to try Muay Boxing to raise your stamina levels before training as a Muay Thai fighter. At the very least, the Glasgow Thai Boxing Academy is a supreme facility; they even have physiotherapists on-site to help you work out any kinks or discomfort you might have after your sparring sessions. And, by offering you an initial lesson at no charge and lessons as low as £5 per, they virtually guarantee the first time you walk in their door wonât be the last. You can also get a cardio workout on their stationary cycles or work the other gym equipment they have.Interestingly enough, one of their heavy bags is shaped like a human torso, the better to gauge the aim of your kicks and punches! This is a fun-loving, family-run facility that is nevertheless serious about working out. Thanks to popular demand, Hangar has added extra Muay Thai classes to their schedule; you may now sele ct either their Wednesday or Thursday evening courses.Even if you are as yet uncertain about becoming a Muay Thai fighter, the Hangar is well worth checking out, along with other Muay Thai clubs in Cardiff.Weâll see you there!

A Day in the Life at Washington University in St. Louis
A Day in the Life at Washington University in St. Louis The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. Sarah is currently a senior at Washington University in St. Louis studying Philosophy, Neuroscience, and Psychology. She specializes ina multitude of subjects including SAT prep tutoring, ACT prep tutoring, Physics tutoring, and Writing tutoring. See what she had to say about her school: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or safe is the campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Sarah: It's very easy to get around campus for most students. It's possible to walk from one end of campus to the other in under ten minutes. The main campus is very flat, and there are many walkways so students can take more efficient routes. Bikes are common, and there are plenty of bike racks. There's also Campus Circ, a bus that students can take to get around campus. It is generally on time and is used by many students. VT: How helpful are the academic advisers? Sarah: Each freshman is assigned an academic advisor at the beginning of their first semester. These advisors are usually deans, and are especially useful when one needs general information or advice about scheduling, courses, or teachers. They also help students lay out a four-year plan to ensure that all requirements are met for graduation. After students choose a major, they are assigned a major advisor who can provide more specialized insight. Generally, these advisors are quite available and willing to help when students seek advice. VT: How would you describe the dorm life? Sarah: The dorms are really nice- they're clean, spacious, and (with the exception of a couple of dorms) recently renovated. Maids clean common areas within suites on at least a weekly basis. Students can request singles, doubles, or triples, and there are accommodations for special needs. The dorms have large common rooms, as well as study rooms, and are conveniently located. Some suites have balconies, many have Tempurpedic beds. They're generally considered to be luxurious. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Sarah: Wash U's most popular majors include Biomedical Engineering, Biology, Philosophy-Neuroscience-Psychology, Anthropology, and Mechanical Engineering. BME, PNP, and Biology are especially well-supported. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Sarah: There are a lot of summer programs for pre-frosh that make it quite easy to make friends before the semester starts. Additionally, freshman floors are generally very close, and most people make long-lasting friendships on their floor. With the combination of the summer programs and freshman floor bonding, it's easy to branch out and make lots of friends as a freshman. VT: How helpful is the Career Center? Sarah: The Career Center can be quite helpful. It frequently holds workshops to help students find internships, work on their resumes, or learn interview skills. It's easy to make appointments and has a centrally located office. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Sarah: There are lots of study rooms in the dorms and scattered around campus. There are several larger libraries on main campus, and many of the buildings include small libraries. There are meeting rooms and classrooms that can also be used for study sessions. Many people study in dining areas both on central campus and in dorm areas. There is no shortage of study space on campus. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Sarah: St. Louis has a lot to offer. Wash U is right next to a large park, Forest Park, that has everything from an art museum to golf to a free zoo. Many students live in an area adjacent to campus that is off of the Delmar Loop, a stretch of a few blocks that has many great restaurants, stores, bars, and a movie theatre. The larger city has tons of great attractions, such as the Arch or City Museum. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Sarah: There are about 7,000 undergraduates. I usually know one or two people in each of my classes, and always run into a few people when walking around campus. However, its big enough that there are tons of new people to meet. It's a great compromise between familiar and new. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Sarah: I took General Chemistry my freshman year. The professor was great, a really talented teacher whose enthusiasm for teaching was obvious in his classes. The first day of class, he called on individual people by name from the audience of over 300 students. One of his last classes fell just before the holidays, and he came in that day in a Santa suit. Even though the course is over, he still greets many of his former students. In addition to these things, I found the course incredibly valuable as it really pushed me to work harder and allowed me to realize that I was capable of handling the level of difficulty presented by the class. 5 Singing Auditions Gone Wrong - And How to Bounce Back
5 Singing Auditions Gone Wrong - And How to Bounce Back Suzy S. Weve all had one at some point or another a bad audition. You prepare like crazy for that singing competition that you swear up and down youre going to nail. However, despite 30 minutes of scales first thing in the morning and an entire day in line spent practicing, you walk into the audition with your head held oh-so-high only to walk out feeling like your head was handed back to you on a lovely silver platter. Below are a few singers who didnt quite measure up to the singing competition they auditioned for. No worries though there is something to take away from each of these auditions that have gone horribly, horribly wrong. The Singing Souls What they lack in vocal quality, they sure make up for in confidence. They might say anybody can outsell the Spice Girls, but these girls really could have learned a thing or two about performing with stage presence had they had a chance to attend a Spice Girls concert. Although, the Singing Souls were most likely belting in diapers while the Spice Girls were out touring the world. Rhonetta Anybody can learn how to sing, but anybody cant be like me. Unfortunately, if youre going to want to compete with JLo and Mariah on the charts, youre going to need to know how to sing. One out of two aint bad, eh Rhonetta? J Star Valentine Picking the right audition song can make or break your audition. Hes definitely got the look, but sometimes you just have to stick to what you know. Mary Roach The moral of this story: if all your friends tell you that youre a great singer get a second professional opinion. Qualtrel Daan Smith Looks can be highly deceiving. OK, so this audition wasnt actually that bad at all. We wouldnt suggest auditioning for a singing competition in this outfit, but Qualtrel captured the essence of what it means to get up on stage and own your performance. Baby, you were born this way! All jokes aside, an audition gone wrong is merely a practice test better preparing us for our final exam. Every singer loves a good singing competition, but not every singing competitor knows how to sing. Like Rhonetta said, though, anyone can sing. Prepare your material months in advance, set aside plenty of time to practice every day, and power through your audition with confidence and poise. You may find yourself in the middle of an audition that has suddenly gone south, but if you buckle down, re-focus and remain true to yourself, you can show those judges just how determined you are to win, and you may be able to bounce right back up like our superstar in the making, Qualtrel! GMAT Combinatorics 1.2 Problem Solutions
GMAT Combinatorics 1.2 Problem Solutions GMAT MBA Admissions Blog 1. Suppose you perform the following experiment - You flip a coin 5 times and record the results. How many different outcomes are there? (A result being a 5-character long string of H's and T's, such as HHTHT) Solution: For every flip of the coin, there are two possible outcomes. Because we flip the coin 5 times, according to the fundamental principle of counting the number of possible outcomes is: [latex]2 imes 2 imes 2 imes 2 imes 2 = 32[/latex] Note that this calculation can also be expressed by [latex] 2^5 [/latex]. In fact, if you flip a coin [latex] n [/latex] times, the number of possible outcomes is [latex] 2^n [/latex]. __________ 2.0 You receive a new debit card in the mail and you are asked to create a new PIN (Personal Identification Number) for your debit card. The PIN must be 4 digits long and each digit must be one of the numbers 0 - 9. You can use the same digit more than once. How many possible PIN numbers are there? Solution: Each number in your PIN can be one of ten digits: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9. One digit must be assigned on each of four places. So, by the fundamental counting principle, the number of outcomes is: [latex]10 imes 10 imes 10 imes 10 = 10,000 [/latex] __________ 2.1 Same as 2, but now you can use each digit only once. Solution: Now that we cannot reuse digits, once we assign a digit to the first place, we will only have 9 options for the second place, then 8 options for the 3rd place and so on. As I mentioned before, this is a permutation - the ordering or a subset of elements taken from a larger set. But, as you'll see in the course of these posts on combinatorics, all the technical jargon and formulas you get in other prep material just reduces to a single principle - the fundamental principle of counting. The number of possible PIN numbers is now, [latex] 10 imes 9 imes 8 imes 7 imes [/latex] = 5040 __________ 2.2 Same as 2, but now you can use each digit only once and you cannot begin the PIN with a zero. Solution: This is very similar to the last problem with one exception. We only have nine possibilities for the first digit. So the number of possible PIN numbers is [latex]9 imes 9 imes 8 imes 7 = 4536 [/latex] __________ 3. Sam, Sally, Xanthar, and their parents drive to the park in their Prion (a Prius that has been modified by Xanthar for hydrogen ion technology). If the front of the car has two seats (the drivers seat and the passenger seat), the back seat will hold three people, and the two parents sit in the front and Sam, Sally, and Xanthar sit in the back seat, how many ways can the family be arranged in the car if each seat contains only one passenger. Solution: The total arrangements in the car depends on the arrangements of two groups - the kids and the parents. We will take the product of these two arrangements because they are not mutually exclusive. [latex]Kid Arrangements = 3 imes 2 imes 1 = 6[/latex] [latex]Parent Arrangements = 2 imes 1 = 2[/latex] [latex] Total Arrangements = 6 imes 2 = 12[/latex] __________ 4.0 You roll two die. How many possible outcomes are there? Solution: You can think of the outcome of one roll as an ordered pair or numbers [latex](x, y)[/latex]. For instance, the ways to roll a sum of seven are [latex](1, 6), (2, 5), (3, 4), (4, 3), (5, 2),[/latex] and [latex](6, 1)[/latex]. Obviously, there are six options for the first number in the ordered pair, and six options for the second number in the ordered pair. So, according to the fundamental principle of counting the number of outcomes is: [latex]6 imes 6 = 36[/latex] __________ 4.1 Same as 4.0. How many ways can you get two even numbers? Solution: We can use the same thinking as before. However, this time, because we are only considering even numbers, there are only 3 options for each number. Thus, the number of possibilities is [latex]3 imes 3 = 9[/latex] __________ 4.2 Same as 4.0. How many ways can you get two odd numbers? Solution: This is the exact same problem as the one above. See the solution to 4.1. __________ 4.3 Same as 4.0. How many ways can you get one even and one odd number? Solution: This may seem somewhat complicated as we don't know in what order the even number and odd number appear in our ordered pair. However, if you were paying attention when you read my original combinatorics post, you might be thinking about the 'complement method.' In fact, it's perfect for this problem. On any given roll, one of three things will happen: You'll get two odds You'll get two evens You'll get an even and an odd We already know the number of ways in which the first two outcomes can happen, and we know the total number of outcomes. So, we can use the complement method: Even Odd = Total - Two Odds - Two Evens Even Odd = 36 - 9 - 9 = 18 __________ 4.4 Same as 4.0. Now take the sum of the two upward facing numbers. How many ways can the sum be an even number? Solution: We can only get and even sum in two ways: Even + Even = Even Odd + Odd = Even Using the problems we already solved above, we know that there are nine ways to roll two evens and nine ways to roll two odds. Since these are mutually exclusive events we add to get the total number of outcomes, which is 18. __________ 4.5 Same as 4.0. Now take the product of the two upward facing numbers. How many ways can the product be an even number? Solution: We proceed as above. We get an even product in one of two ways Even X Even = Even Even X Odd = Odd X Even = Even The number of ways the first even can happen is nine and the number of ways the second event can happen is 18. Since they are mutually exclusive, we add, and get 27. For more information on our GMAT Tutors and GMAT Tutoring approach, please click here.

The 5 Best Online Language Labs for an Explosive Learning Experience The 5 Best Online Language Labs for an Explosive Learning Experience Nerdy guys in lab coats.White mice in cages.Colored liquids in test tubes and beakers. These images may come to mind when we talk about a âlaboratory.âBut youâll never find any of these inside a language laboratory. No microscopes, no Bunsen burners and no graduated cylinders. Theyâre not exactly cooking up a new, strange language in there, like a multilingual Dr. Frankenstein working on some linguistic monster. So what then is a language lab, and what sort of ungodly experiments take place inside? Read on and find out. What Is a Laboratory for Language?Okay, let go of that idea of scientists working with test tubes and beakers for a minute.A language laboratory is a facilityâ"usually a room in a universityâ"where students use technology to learn a new language. Its said that the language lab was made possible by Thomas Edisonâs invention of the phonograph in 1877, which allowed the recording and reproduction of sounds. The University of Grenobleâs language learning facility, established in 1908, is considered one of the very first. The language lab has always reflected the technology and the thinking of its time. So, in the 1960âs, when analog cassette tapes were all the rage, students donned bulky headsets and countlessly replayed recordings of native speakers pronouncing words, phrases, sentences and even entire dialogues. This Audio-lingual Method was the preferred wisdom at that time. It postulated that language can be learned in specific discrete units and, in order to master a language, one has to do countless, repetitive oral drills. And so the language lab became a hub for those familiar âListen and Repeatâ schemes. If you didnât know any better, stepping into one would feel like entering a cubicle farm or a dated call center floor. The conventional language labs heyday lasted from the 1960s up until the early 1970s, with 5000 labs in existence just in the United States alone. But when the Audio-lingual Method began to fall out of favor in the late 70s, as Chomsky and others began questioning its underlying principles, the perceived importance of language labs also took a hit.The Language Lab Renaissance would come in the 1980s. With the increasing popularity of the computer, new possibilities were made available to language students. The computer was more versatile as a language learning tool and soon, video and software added more layers of learning experience. The development of the World Wide Web really skyrocketed things and the explosion of apps, interactive programs and digitalized material meant that information was not only democratized, it was practically made limitless. The language lab has truly come a long way from the cassette tapes of old.The Language Labs of TodayLet me ask you a question. What gadget are you using to read this post?Is it a tablet? A mobile phone? A computer?Donât look now, because what youâre holding or what you carry around in your pocket is a veritable language laborato ry. In fact, its just as powerful, if not more powerful, than what universities had in their air conditioned facilities a decade ago.So if you think your phone is only good for posting pictures to Instagram or telling people what you had for lunch, then youâre really not tapping into some tremendous potential right in front of you.Todayâs tablets and smartphones are slowly blurring our definition of a language lab as just one room in a university or school. Instead of walking into a language laboratory, students are taking the whole lab with them wherever they go. This virtual version of the language lab room has not only increased in power, with capabilities not even dreamed a generation ago, it has decreased in size so much that you can even tuck it under your pillow. Not to mention, this language lab room has become even more social, because students are having real-time chats and discussions in the virtual world, as opposed to sitting isolated with a giant headset on.So what does it mean to âbuildâ your own language lab?It means downloading the right apps to help you create a space for learning. Although our original definition of a language lab as a âroomâ has changed, the part where it says that you should use technology to learn a new language has not.The 5 Best Online Language Labs for an Explosive Learning ExperienceBabbelLetâs start with the 2013 winner of Microsoftâs âInnovate 4 Society Award,â Babbel. The app will take you through a whirlwind of interactive courses that can teach you grammar and vocabulary through interactive games, tongue twisters, dialogues, songs and sayings. Well, youâll be drilled, over and over until your phoneâs battery runs out. For example, lets say they want to teach you the word, el niño (the boy). Youâll probably be given multiple choice at first, so all you do is pick the correct answer. Then theyâll switch it up and ask you to choose the correct English translation for the Spanish word. Then theyâll give you fill-in-the-blanks tasks. Next, youâll probably hear the phrase being spoken, and youâll have to type the words into a box. All this time, a cute picture of a boy will be accompanying the phrase so youve got something to go by.But this is no cookie-cutter tool. Not everybody gets the same series of tasks because it will all depend on how you perform. Duolingoâs algorithm rates your progress and determines how to serve you best. This app is perfect for the absolute beginner whos intent on learning a language on the go, or while waiting for his latte at Starbucks.SkypeYou may very well ask, âHow does Skype have anything to do with learning a new language?âQuite a lot actually. This means you can cut through the geographical distance and get connected to specific people who can do a lot of good for your language learning cause.Do the terms ânative speakersâ and âlanguage exchange partnersâ ring any bells? Well, Skype is a way of getting in touch with these people.âLanguage exchange partnersâ belong to a special group of native speakers who are also interested in learning your first language. So maybe youâre an English speaker trying to learn Japanese. You should strive to find a native Japanese speaker whoâs interested in learning English, so you can trade the language skills you have for the ones he or she has. This way, teaching and learning goes both ways. You teach each other your languages and may become lifelong friends in the process.Impossible? I think not.Hereâs a post that teaches you how to find these wonderful people and how to get the most out of your Skype. As we end this post, let me remind you of what you have in your handsâ"itâs not just a phone, itâs not just a tablet.Itâs a veritable language lab that learners of yore could only dream of.You have in your hands the power to learn a new language in a whole new way.
